What is a dedicated server?

As the name suggests, a dedicated server is a server which is completely devoted to your website or account. Most professional web hosting companies have servers which are large scale computers that have the capacity to handle a lot of requests and can hosts a lot of websites. This is called shared hosting.

However this solution is better suited for websites that are not particularly large or complex. But if you think that your website is going to have a lot of data, so is going to be particularly large with complex features and applications and receive a high volume of visitors then a dedicated server may be better for you. Although it can be a burden on your pocket it does have some advantages that make up for the extra cost.

Also before you choose a dedicated server hosting package find out if the server is managed, semi- managed or non managed. What this means is; if the server is managed it means that the hosting company will take care of the server for you. In this case the web hosting company will have 24/7/365 customer support to sought out any problems that you may encounter.

But if the server is non managed and if something goes wrong after setup you will have to take care of it. Maintaining the uptime and upgrading the site will be entirely your responsibility. And if you are not an experienced user this may not be the best option for you.
